Which perfume for a wedding? A guide for the bride and the guest

Expert adviceWomen's fragrance4-min read

In “The Drama” (A24), released in cinemas on 3 April 2026, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson play an engaged couple whose relationship wavers the week before their wedding. On screen, doubt makes the plot; in real life, the big day is prepared — down to the scent trail. Bride or guest: here is how to choose the perfume of a wedding, make it last from morning to the final slow dance, and turn it into the most lasting of memories.

1“The Drama”: a wedding on the brink

Directed by Norway's Kristoffer Borgli and produced by A24, “The Drama” follows an engaged couple — Zendaya (Euphoria, Dune) and Robert Pattinson — whose story cracks just days before the ceremony, with Alana Haim as maid of honour. We won't spoil any more: what interests us is what the film quietly reminds us of. A wedding is a day of raw emotion, and if one detail engraves those emotions in the memory for decades, it is scent. Choosing the perfume of the big day is therefore no checklist item: it is deciding what that memory will smell like. Follow the guide through our women's fragrances.

2The bride: a trail that becomes a memory

First rule: choose your perfume one to two months ahead, and wear it for several full days — a fragrance is judged on skin, over time, not on a blotter between two dress fittings. As for olfactory families, three safe bets have graced ceremonies forever. White florals and powdery rose first, in natural dialogue with the bouquet: that is the very spirit of Chloé Eau de Parfum, the fresh, powdery rose composed in 2008 by perfumers Michel Almairac and Amandine Clerc-Marie, now one of the great classics of our women's eaux de parfum. Peony next, the wedding flower par excellence, at the heart of Peony & Blush Suede by Jo Malone London, the cologne so many brides adopt for its fruity, suede-soft delicacy. Finally, clean musks, the “second skin” effect: For Her Pure Musc by Narciso Rodriguez envelops without ever saturating — ideal if you want to stay yourself, only more so.

Did you know?

Smell is the only one of our senses directly wired to the brain areas that handle emotion and memory (the amygdala and hippocampus) — the famous “Proust madeleine effect”. Many brides therefore reserve a perfume for the big day, then wear it again only on great occasions: a few sprays, and the whole day comes back, intact.

3The olfactory pyramid of Chloé Eau de Parfum

Star of our ceremony selection, Chloé Eau de Parfum opens on a fresh, sparkling trio of peony, litchi and freesia; its heart unfolds a powdery rose escorted by lily-of-the-valley and magnolia — a true bridal bouquet; its base of Virginia cedar and amber carries warmth and staying power into the night. Feminine without being heady, present without upstaging anyone: the very definition of a ceremony perfume, to be found in our Chloé collection.

4Guest, dress, ceremony: the golden rules

As a guest, one instruction only: accompany, never upstage. Save the heady orientals for other evenings and go for a clean trail — a delicate musk, or a luminous floral like Flowerbomb Tiger Lily by Viktor & Rolf, a solar floral perfect for an outdoor summer ceremony. For a garden wedding, jasmine is a natural ally: Chloé Nomade Jasmin Naturel Intense renders it fresh and elegant. As for staying power, three moves: moisturise the skin before applying (perfume holds better on nourished skin), spray on warm points — neck, wrists, nape — after hair and makeup but before slipping on the dress, and never spray silk or satin directly, as they stain. Finally, slip a small format into your clutch for the evening touch-up. And if you are after a muskier, ambassador-style rose, Idôle by Lancôme, which we covered this week, remains a ceremony staple.

Your questions, answered

Which perfume should a bride choose?

A white floral, a powdery rose or a clean musk: families that converse with the bouquet and the day's emotions without saturating. Test it on skin over several full days, one to two months before the ceremony.

How do you make perfume last all wedding day?

Moisturise the skin before applying, spray on warm points (neck, wrists, nape) and in the hair, then plan an evening touch-up with a small format. An eau de parfum will naturally outlast an eau de toilette.

Can you spray perfume on the wedding dress?

Avoid it: alcohol and concentrates can stain silk, satin and delicate fabrics. Perfume the skin and hair before putting on the dress — never the fabric directly.

Wedding guest: which perfume to wear?

A present but discreet trail that doesn't compete with the bride: clean musks, luminous florals or light solar notes. Two or three sprays are plenty, especially for an indoor ceremony.

New perfume for your wedding, or your usual one?

Both schools have a point. A perfume chosen for the occasion becomes a dedicated scent memory, brought out on great dates; your usual signature guarantees you'll recognise yourself in the photos… and in the embraces. What matters is testing it in real conditions.
