Few noses can claim both a niche monument revered by collectors and two of modern perfumery's greatest popular successes. Dominique Ropion, Master Perfumer at IFF, is one of them: his the incandescent rose of Portrait of a Lady, but also Alien by Mugler and La Vie Est Belle by Lancôme. Portrait of a virtuoso — and of his creations to discover at Olara.
1Who is Dominique Ropion?
A French perfumer trained in Grasse and at IFF (International Flavors & Fragrances) since 2000, Dominique Ropion received the title of Master Perfumer in 2018 — a distinction IFF grants only to its most accomplished creators, often compared to a knighthood. His signature? Floral accords pushed to maximum intensity, laboratory-grade technical precision, and a rare ability to shine as brightly in confidential haute parfumerie as in major global launches. It is at Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, the house that prints perfumers' names on its bottles the way a publisher prints its authors', that his work reads best.
2Portrait of a Lady: the magisterial rose
Launched in 2010, Portrait of a Lady is arguably the summit of his work: a sumptuously overdosed Turkish rose, carried by patchouli, incense and sandalwood — an oriental floral turned cult, regularly cited among the greatest perfumes of the 21st century. At Frédéric Malle, Ropion also signs Carnal Flower, the green, carnal tuberose created in 2005, and Promise, an oriental gem from the Desert Gems collection — both in stock among our women's fragrances.
Did you know?
Carnal Flower contains by far the highest concentration of natural tuberose in all of perfumery — a technical tour de force by Ropion, who spent months taming this famously untameable flower. The perfume pays tribute to Candice Bergen, Frédéric Malle's aunt, in her role in “Carnal Knowledge”.
3The olfactory pyramid of Portrait of a Lady
Portrait of a Lady opens on a fruity, spicy burst of raspberry, blackcurrant and cinnamon; the heart unfolds one of perfumery's most intense roses — a Turkish rose essence at a spectacular dose; the base anchors it all in patchouli, incense, sandalwood and benzoin, rounded by musks. A sovereign trail, best approached in the 10 ml discovery size, from our selection of women's eaux de parfum.
4From Alien to La Vie Est Belle: the art of success
Ropion's genius is speaking all of perfumery's languages. In 2005, with Laurent Bruyère, he composed Alien by Mugler: a solar jasmine sambac set on cashmeran and amber, now one of the pillars of the Mugler collection — its purple talisman bottle refillable. In 2012, alongside Anne Flipo and Olivier Polge, he co-signed La Vie Est Belle by Lancôme, the praline-laced gourmand iris fronted by Julia Roberts, planetary bestseller of the Lancôme collection. Three registers — opulent niche, futuristic oriental, luminous gourmand — one single hand.
