Since 1996, Azzaro's Chrome has embodied Mediterranean aquatic freshness — a luminous blue turned signature. Two of its cult spin-offs have just landed at Olara: Chrome Legend (2007), crisp apple over ambery woods, and Chrome United (2013), the fougère of summers among friends. Portrait of a family that smells of light.
1Chrome, the aquatic ode of 1996
Created in 1996 by perfumer Gérard Haury, Chrome was conceived as an ode to the bond between father and son — family weekends by the water, the light of the South. Its metallic, aquatic freshness made it one of the great masculine classics of the 1990s, still widely worn thirty years on. The line has since grown with a more intense, multi-faceted Eau de Parfum, then a Parfum that revisits the myth in its deepest concentration — the whole family is gathered in our Azzaro collection.
2Chrome Legend: the apple that became a legend
Launched in 2007, Chrome Legend is signed by Christophe Raynaud and Olivier Pescheux — the duo who, together with Michel Girard, also gave us Paco Rabanne's legendary 1 Million. Their idea: warm up Chrome's aquatic freshness with a fruity, woody facet. The opening bites into apple and orange refined with a tea note; the heart lays down an earthy accord of oakmoss and vetiver softened by tonka bean; the base settles into musk, amber and cedar. A companionable aromatic-fruity — less metallic than the original, tailor-made for September and the first cool days.
3Chrome United: the Mediterranean among friends
Six years later, in 2013, Chrome United, composed by perfumer Richard Ibanez, shifts the story: after father and son, it celebrates friends and shared moments. Bergamot opens onto a dazzling Mediterranean landscape, aromatic lavender sets the tempo — a nod to the great French fougères — and the cedar-vetiver duo brings the quiet warmth of summer afternoons. It is the sunniest and easiest-going of the Chromes: office, sport, weekend, it goes everywhere.
Did you know?
In perfumery, a spin-off like Chrome Legend or Chrome United is called a “flanker”: a fragrance that keeps the name and spirit of a bestseller while exploring a new facet — woodier, fresher, more intense. Some flankers end up becoming classics in their own right, with their own devotees… to the point of being sought after years after launch.
4Which Chrome should you choose?
For the original signature, that luminous metallic freshness: the 1996 Eau de Toilette, an everyday safe bet. For a more enveloping, fruity-woody version, perfect from September to the holidays: Chrome Legend. For the most laid-back aromatic, between lavender and cedar: Chrome United. And if you want more depth and staying power, the Eau de Parfum and the Parfum push the legend to its limits. All our masculine fresh scents await among our men's eaux de toilette and our men's fragrances.
Your questions, answered
What is the difference between Chrome, Chrome Legend and Chrome United?
Three characters, one family: Chrome (1996) is the original aquatic, metallic freshness; Chrome Legend (2007) adds a fruity apple-tea facet over a warmer ambery-woody base; Chrome United (2013) plays the Mediterranean aromatic card, between bergamot, lavender and cedar-vetiver.
Is Chrome Legend still available?
Yes — that is precisely the good news: Chrome Legend has just arrived at Olara as a 100 ml Eau de Toilette, in limited stock. A flanker turned cult favourite, often hard to find in perfumeries.
What does Chrome Legend smell like?
Crisp apple and sparkling orange refined with tea, over an earthy heart of oakmoss, tonka bean and vetiver, and a musk-amber-cedar base. Fruitier and warmer than the original Chrome, it pairs beautifully with September and mid-season.
Is Chrome United a summer fragrance?
It shines in warm weather thanks to its bergamot and lavender, but its cedar-vetiver base gives it enough backbone to wear all year round — especially at the office, where its aromatic freshness stays elegant and discreet.
Who created Azzaro's Chrome fragrances?
The 1996 original is the work of Gérard Haury. Chrome Legend (2007) is signed by Christophe Raynaud and Olivier Pescheux, and Chrome United (2013) was composed by Richard Ibanez.
