Serge Lutens Datura noir - Eau de parfum
Description :
Since 1992 and their groundbreaking Féminité du bois, Serge Lutens and Christopher Sheldrake have been offering the fruit of their fruitful collaboration to all those who want original, powerful scents, far removed from the usual perfume classics. Datura Noir, described as a dangerous fragrance, is in fact much more a gentle elixir than a powerful poison. Lutens magic strikes again...
Datura Noir, l'ensorceleuse by Serge Lutens and Christopher Sheldrake
Christopher Sheldrake and Serge Lutens met in Japan while Lutens was working for Shisheido. It was immediately love at first sight for the two men, and the result was a fragrance that would vehemently launch all the others in the Lutens range: Féminité du Bois of course!
From then on, the two men composed absolute masterpieces of originality and poetry. Christopher Sheldrake, Chanel's "second man", finds in his collaboration with Serge Lutens the means to explore all the facets of his creativity, and Serge Lutens sees in this man the ideal partner for all his fragrance desires (follies?).
With Datura Noir, Lutens wanted to explore the light-dark facets of their olfactory territory. By invoking a poisonous flower, the master of words who believes that "I've always seen perfume as a vehicle for expression" plays on our fears to better conquer and surprise us. And Datura Noir is no exception, so bewitching does the pretty flower seem to be with its sunny, flowery facets.
A question then arises: Serge Lutens was making us fear Hell with this new Datura Noir, but isn't he making us visit Paradise?
What if Datura Noir was a pretty, bright, sunny flower?
"In the old days, when a witch was burned, a small Datura shrub was planted on the ashes of the pyre so that its roots could soak up the last of the evil energies..." Serge Lutens for Datura Noir.
Once again, doubt sets in, and the camphorated top notes of Datura Noir do little to reassure us. And yet, the pretty Mediterranean citrus already has us breathing in much brighter top notes than we expected. In the heart, the mysterious smoke that surrounded this precious Datura Noir has completely dissipated, giving us a glimpse of real pieces of Paradise thanks to ylang-ylang and tuberose. Coconut, bitter almond and vanilla definitely transport us to gourmand, exotic edens enveloped in the softness of white musk. Playful, the great poet of words will still send us a touch of chiaroscuro heliotrope to remind us that this paradise remains shrouded in mystery.
Datura Noir, then, is indeed a pretty hallucinogenic flower that plays at transporting us, as it pleases, between flowery, sunny paradise and deep, camphorous smoke. Once again, let's be sure, the two partners in the Serge Lutens perfumery have created a fragrance composition with Datura Noir that will never resemble any other.
